The residence duration calculator counts the days you have spent in Turkey and abroad and estimates when the 5 years on an uninterrupted work permit required for Turkish citizenship (from the start of your work permit) and the 8 years required for a long-term residence permit (from your first residence permit) will be complete; in short, it keeps track of your Turkey residence duration for citizenship. You enter your trips as date ranges and instantly see the 12-month limit on time abroad and the warning for a single absence of 6 months.
What is the uninterrupted period?
The uninterrupted period is the time a foreign national has spent in Turkey (officially Türkiye) without a break on valid permits. A long-term residence permit requires 8 years of uninterrupted residence. For citizenship by the general route, however, the period that counts is 5 years on an uninterrupted work permit counting back from the application date; time on a residence permit does not count, and even a one-month gap between two permits resets the count. For citizenship, the total time spent abroad within those 5 years must not exceed 12 months.
How is the residence duration calculated?
- Total period
The number of days from the start date of your first residence permit to the calculation date is worked out.
- Days abroad
For each trip, the number of days between the departure and return dates is calculated, and all trips are added up. You can add as many trip rows as you like.
- Time in Turkey
Days in Turkey = total days − days abroad.
- Citizenship estimate
5 years are added to the start date of your work permit. If the total time abroad in this period exceeds 12 months, or a single trip exceeds 6 months, the calculator gives a warning.
- Long-term residence estimate
The 8-year period is calculated; if you selected student as the residence type, time spent on a student residence permit counts as half.
Sample residence duration calculation
A foreign national whose work permit began on 1 September 2022, renewed without a gap since then, and who has traveled abroad three times has the following trips:
| Trip | Departure | Return | Days abroad |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 10 July 2023 | 20 August 2023 | 41 |
| 2 | 22 December 2024 | 5 January 2025 | 14 |
| 3 | 1 June 2025 | 15 September 2025 | 106 |
| Total | 161 days (about 5.3 months) |
When 1 September 2027 is selected as the calculation date, the calculator gives the following results:
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Total period | 1,826 days (5 years) |
| Spent abroad | 161 days |
| Spent in Turkey | 1,665 days |
| 12-month limit on time abroad | Not exceeded |
| Longest single trip | 106 days (under 6 months) |
| Estimated 5-year date for citizenship | 1 September 2027 |
| Estimated 8-year date for long-term residence | 1 September 2030 |
If the same person's first two years (1 September 2022 to 31 August 2024) had been spent on a student residence permit, those 2 years would count as 1 year in the long-term calculation, so the 8-year date would shift to an estimated 1 September 2031.
Why do the 12-month and 6-month rules matter?
In a citizenship application, the period is examined counting back from the application date. If your total time abroad exceeds 12 months, you may need to postpone your application until the excess falls outside the 5-year window. A single absence of more than 6 months also causes a separate problem in terms of continuity. Gaps between work permits, for example an extension filed after the deadline has passed, reset the 5 years for citizenship.
For a long-term residence permit, in addition to the 8-year period, you must not have received social assistance in the last 3 years, and you need sufficient income, health insurance and no public order obstacle.
The calculator produces estimates based on the dates you enter; we recommend comparing your results with your official entry and exit records. Even a single missing trip can change the 12-month calculation.
How the residence type and periods are assessed in a citizenship application is up to the competent authority; in special cases such as student residence, we recommend getting advice before you apply.
The next step once your period is complete
If your 5-year period is coming to an end, you can check the other requirements with the Turkish citizenship eligibility test and review our Turkish citizenship service for the application process. If your period is not yet complete, the most important task is to file your work permit extension applications on time; if your permit has expired, you can see the possible fine with the overstay fine calculator.
Spending 8 years in Turkey on certain permits also matters for foreign employees, as it can provide an exemption from the work permit assessment criteria; for details, see our work permit in Turkey page. To see the process end to end, read our step-by-step roadmap from residence permit to Turkish citizenship, and if your extension application was refused, our article on residence permit rejection reasons and appeals.

This calculation is for information only; the final assessment is made by the competent authority at the time of application, and application costs are determined by the official tariff. The information applies to 2026 and is updated when the legislation changes.
Frequently asked questions
For a citizenship application by the general route, the total time you spend abroad within the 5 years counting back from the application date must not exceed 12 months. A single absence of more than 6 months can also cause problems.
You need 8 years of uninterrupted residence in Turkey. In addition, you must not have received social assistance in the last 3 years, and you need sufficient income, health insurance and no public order obstacle.
In the long-term residence permit calculation, half of the time spent on a student residence permit is taken into account; for example, 4 years of study count as 2 years. When you select student as the residence type in the calculator, this rule is applied automatically.
On the general route, the 5-year period runs from the start of your uninterrupted work permit, and the calculator uses that date; time on a residence permit does not count toward these 5 years. However, since the period in a citizenship application is examined counting back from the application date, what matters is that your days abroad within this window stay within the limit.
Gaps between permits break the period; for a work permit, even a one-month gap resets the 5 years for citizenship. For this reason, we recommend filing the extension application before your permit expires, starting from 60 days before the expiry date.
Yes. On the general route to citizenship, the 5 years are based on time on a work permit, and that time also counts toward long-term residence. Enter your work permit start date in the calculator for the citizenship estimate; consult us about special cases.
