The fine is estimated at twice the residence permit fee; any part of a month counts as a full month. Entry bans are at the authorities' discretion and may be longer in public-order cases.

The Turkey overstay fine calculator works out the overstay period, the estimated fine and the possible entry ban on exit for foreign nationals who remain in Turkey after their visa, visa-free period or residence permit has expired. Just enter your nationality and the dates; the calculator shows the scenarios of leaving after paying the fine and leaving without paying it separately.

What is an overstay fine?

An overstay (visa violation) occurs when a foreign national remains in Turkey (officially Türkiye) without legal status after their visa, visa exemption or residence permit has expired. In this case, a fine calculated at twice the residence permit fee for the relevant nationality is paid on exit. Depending on the length of the overstay and whether the fine is paid, an entry ban to Turkey may also be imposed.

How is the overstay fine calculated?

  1. Overstay period

The period from the day after your visa or residence expiry date until your exit (or calculation) date is worked out in days and months. Every month that has started counts as a full month; for example, an overstay of 4 months and 10 days is calculated as 5 months.

  2. Fine amount

    The fine is twice your nationality's residence fee formula: fine = 2 × (first-month fee + (months − 1) × following-month fee). For Group A, this means 50 USD + 10 USD × (months − 1).

  3. Entry ban

The overstay period and whether you leave voluntarily after paying the fine are assessed together, and an estimated ban period is shown.

For citizens of countries exempt from the residence fee, the fee amount is zero, so the calculator may not show a fine amount; however, the entry ban assessment still applies to them.

Sample overstay fine calculations

ScenarioOverstay periodMonths countedEstimated fineBan (fine paid)Ban (fine unpaid)
German citizen (A), visa expiry 10 March, exit 20 July4 months 10 days550 + 4 × 10 = 90 USD1 month6 months

In the first example, paying the fine reduces the ban from 6 months to 1 month. In the second example, although the fine is low, a 1-year ban may apply even if the person pays and leaves, because the overstay exceeds 1 year.

Points to keep in mind

The tables reflect general practice. Longer bans may be imposed where there are public order or security grounds, and the administration has discretion. The restriction code entered in your records on exit may affect your future visa and residence applications.

If you filed a residence application on time and it has not yet been decided, your situation may be assessed differently; consult us before you calculate. Fine amounts depend on the current residence fee for your nationality; for definitive information, the Presidency of Migration Management prevails.

What you can do after an overstay

If you are still in Turkey, the most important step is not to let the overstay grow longer. If you have a way to stay legally, look into residence permit extension and application options; you can see the amount you will pay for your nationality with the residence permit fee calculator. For future citizenship plans, keep track of your time abroad and any overstay periods with the residence duration calculator.

If you have received an entry ban, we manage the administrative application process through our entry ban removal service; where a lawsuit is required, the process is handled through our partner attorneys. You can get immigration legal support for objections to administrative decisions, and if your application was refused, read our guide on what to do if your residence permit is rejected.

Frequently asked questions

The fine is calculated at twice the residence permit fee for your nationality. In Group A, which includes most countries, 50 USD is paid for the first month and 10 USD for each following month; for example, the fine for a 5-month overstay is 90 USD.

The period is calculated from the day after your visa or residence permit expired until your exit date. For the fine, every month that has started counts as a full month.

Foreign nationals who pay the fine and leave voluntarily are generally not given an entry ban for overstays of up to 3 months. For those who leave without paying the fine or are deported, a 3-month ban may apply.

Foreign nationals who leave without paying the fine or are deported receive longer entry bans; for overstays of more than 2 years, the ban can rise to 5 years. You may also be asked to pay the fine on your next entry.

The fine is usually collected at the border crossing when you leave Turkey. Whether or not you pay it directly affects the length of the entry ban.

In some cases, an administrative application can be made to lift an entry ban or shorten its duration; where necessary, a lawsuit is filed through our partner attorneys. Consult our team specializing in deportation and restriction codes to have your file assessed.
